When father winter sweeps in along with holiday cheer, family fun, and plenty of shopping to do, it’s easy to get distracted from our daily grooming habits and routines such as taking extra care of our body and face during cold weather months.

As the elements change, so does our skin and how it responds to dry winter air and the dry air created by heat we use to stay warm. Most of us have felt and experienced it at one point or another…dry cracked lips, dry patches on the face and body and peeling, flaky skin. None of which are fun things to deal with and can be real downers when the goal is to relax and have fun during the festive season.

Melanin rich skin requires special attention during colder months, and keeping in mind that your skin is a highly absorbent, live, breathing organ is the first step to taking extra special care of your face and body at this time of year. By keeping this in mind, you will find it easier to remember the importance of implementing a few extra tips and tricks to help you maintain that healthy, hydrated glow all year long. No matter where you are on your skin care journey, these top three tips should help you out.

  • Water, water, and more water. We can’t express it enough. The more you drink, the better off you are. At Urban Skin Rx, we believe that beautiful skin begins from within. Drinking lots of water not only keeps you healthy by flushing toxins from the body, it also hydrates your skin from the inside out. During the colder months we recommend drinking even more water than you normally would as part of your daily routine. Start the day by drinking a full 8oz glass of water at room temperature. Also try carrying an 8oz water bottle around with you during the day and keep it filled to the brim every time you get to half levels. At night, after you cleanse and moisturize your face, finish the evening the same way your started the day. With a full 8oz glass of water before bed.
  • Change up your skin care routine. It’s the same as makeup. You need a shade for the summer and a lighter shade for the winter to accommodate your skin tone changes during different seasons.  The same goes for your skin needs. If dryness is more of an issue during colder weather, consider switching to a heavier moisturizer or adding our Hyrdranutrient Radiance Restore Oil to your daily skin care regimen. You can also increase your use to 3x per day vs two times by moisturizing mid-day after lunch. Our full line of hydrating products is the perfect place to start if you’re looking to add more moisture to your normal skin routine. To find the products best suited for your skin type, try taking our skin quiz or going with our Dull Skin Age Repair Package that is bound to get you right.
  • Exfoliate like a boss. Yes, periodic exfoliating should be a year-round thing, but during the winter months you should be religious about it and do so on a weekly basis. The dryer our skin is, the quicker cells die leaving layers of old skin on top of new skin that need to be removed.  For the body, consider making a homemade body scrub with sugar, olive oil, and essential oils for fragrance. Finish with our Skin Renewal body lotion to seal in moisture and continue exfoliation. For the face, try using our Purifying Pumpkin Pore Mask and then topping off your glow with our HydraBalance Instant Moisture Infusion.
