Urban Skin Rx®, an unparalleled line of clinical skincare products, was developed by Rachel Roff, a highly successful Licensed Aesthetician. In 2006 Rachel opened her own medical spa, in Charlotte, NC, and it quickly became the leading medical spa and laser center for treating melanin-rich skin. Through her experience working on clients, Rachel learned which ingredients and formulations most effectively improved common conditions in skin of color, including hyperpigmentation and melasma. Recognizing the wide unmet need for products to address the concerns of diverse skin tones, Rachel founded Urban Skin Rx® in 2010. Urban Skin Rx® and Pro Strength™ collections include effective, targeted solutions with scientifically researched ingredients to help reduce the appearance of dark marks and uneven skin tone. The brand also offers additional products that smooth texture, reduce the visible signs of aging and fight acne and dry skin. Urban Skin Rx® is sold online at urbanskinrx.com and at Target, Ulta, Walmart, Amazon, CVS, QVC.com, HSN.com and Dermstore.com. In 2020, the brand launched its first international distribution in Nigeria.

What was your reason for becoming a licensed aesthetician?Once puberty hit for me years ago, I was so self-conscious of my skin! I had horrible acne which resulted in dark marks and I had a difficult time managing the two. My parents eventually took me to see a dermatologist, who prescribed RetinA at the time. That alone didn’t cut it but with the help of my mother’s friend, Marilyn and some skincare advice from my teen magazines, I was able to turn my skin around with a daily skincare routine. Because I was able to see results by adjusting my regimen with the right products and ingredients, I became skincare obsessed and wanted to help others that were dealing with the same issues I did so many years ago. Because of the many dark spots from breakouts, I relied on makeup to help make my skin look even and since then my goal was to one day feel confident in my own skin without having to depend on wearing makeup to have “nice skin.”

How long have you been a licensed aesthetician and what do you love most about being one?I’ve been a licensed aesthetician for almost 3 years; however, I’ve always kept my “ear to the beauty streets” regarding skincare and have been working in the beauty industry for almost two decades! Making it official by getting my license was a step I felt I needed to take to increase my credibility in the skincare and beauty industry and I love that I get to work at Urban Skin Rx as a melanin expert so that I can help others the way I needed it so long ago before this brand was available. I always get the most excited when I get follow-up emails from clients telling me how happy they are with their skin and the improvements they’re seeing. That’s what it’s all about for me!

When you’re not helping your clients boost their glow, what are you doing?Honestly, when I’m not helping clients, I’m probably reading about some new product or researching ingredients and how they work best together. I’m a skincare nerd and junkie so I’m usually doing some type of treatment to my own skin to see my own improvements with hyperpigmentation and as I get older, I’m focusing more on slowing down the hands of time. Besides reading about skincare, I do enjoy reality shows like Love Island, UK and my favorite daily soap opera, General Hospital!

What is your favorite USRx product?Super C Brightening Serum for sure! I know you only asked for one, but for me, this serum is paired best with an SPF and my go-to right now is the new SheerGlow Even Tone Daily Defense Mineral Moisturizer SPF 30. It’s all about the antioxidants for me and the Super C is chock full of the best ones and paired with the zinc oxide in the SheerGlow, this combo is a must for me every day to fight the telltale signs of aging!

about me
I became obsessed with skincare out of necessity due to the issues I was having with oily, break-out-prone skin. Knowing what I know now, I realize it was due to hormone fluctuations during adolescence. I wanted desperately to have what at least looked like “good skin” and this led me to dabble into makeup. I wasn’t sure if my parents would let me wear makeup at such a young age and quite frankly, I was a bit embarrassed because I didn’t want to draw any extra attention to myself, especially not to my skin. I made sure to wear just enough to make it “appear” as if my skin were clear and this “natural” aesthetic is what later shaped how I approach makeup styling as a professional makeup artist.
After working in the beauty industry for over two decades, I’ve acquired an expansive knowledge regarding makeup and skincare products, ingredients and how to put it all together into an effective daily regimen. After working in the industry for so long, I decided to further increase my knowledge by attending Aveda Arts & Sciences here in Charlotte, NC in 2019 and received my esthetics license the same year. I love that I get to work with diverse skin tones while helping to improve my clients’ skin. It’s such a rewarding feeling when I have clients that see their skin improve and can feel confident in the skin they're in.
