The ABCs of Even Tone Skin
Dark spots. Signs of aging. Post-acne scarring and overall unevenness. The struggle is real when it comes to your skin. And if these concerns concern you, we hear you glowgetter™ and most importantly, we’re here for you!
The first step to even tone skin is to identify what’s causing the unevenness and to take preventive measures. Sun exposure is a common cause of dark marks. Make sure that you wear a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 every day and reapply every two hours if you are outside in the sun. We love our new SheerGlow™ Even Tone Daily Defense Mineral Moisturizer SPF 30 that provides sheer mineral protection to diverse skin tones. If you have blemish-prone skin and your breakouts are leaving behind nasty dark marks, start a clear skin regimen including our Clear Complexion Acne Serum and Spot Treatment that quickly shrinks pimples, almost on the spot! If your unevenness is caused by ingrown hairs or tweezing and shaving, you may want to consider laser hair removal. If you struggle with eczema, using a product with hydrocortisone or colloidal oatmeal can help. If you’re not sure what is causing your skin concerns or you need information on how to treat them, help is just a few clicks away with our Melanin Experts™ Network! With more than 300 dermatologists that specialize in skin of color, we can connect you with the expert nearest you for a virtual consultation and advice.
The next step to even tone skin is to know your ABCs… Vitamins A, B and C. On their own and even more powerful when paired together, these skincare essentials are the discoloration trifecta that effectively targets dark marks to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone and signs of aging.
So what can these vitamins do for your skin? Let’s take a look at the benefits of each one.
Vitamin A in Skincare
Vitamin A gets an A+ in skincare! More commonly known as Retinol, Vitamin A exfoliates to enhance the look of skin tone and texture and improve the appearance of those annoying breakouts and post-breakout marks. It also works wonders to improve the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
Because Retinol can be irritating, we recommend using it at night and a sunscreen should be applied in the daytime (but you know to do that already!) because Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
Vitamin B3 in Skincare
You often hear of Vitamin B in food but in the skincare world you’ve probably heard of it as Niacinamide. A form of Vitamin B, Niacinamide improves the look of fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, texture and redness. The “B” could actually stand for “brightening” as this vitamin is known to enhance your glow. Vitamin B can also ease irritation from Retinol so they’re great to pair together!
Vitamin C in Skincare
Another one of the holy grail skincare ingredients, Vitamin C, often listed as L-Ascorbic Acid on your skincare label, is an antioxidant that brightens skin, neutralizes free radical damage and improves the look of hyperpigmentation and aging skin. Vitamin C can be used daily and for best results, we recommend that it’s applied in the morning.
