What Causes Skin Tags During Pregnancy?

pregnant person

It might come as a surprise to learn that skin tags during pregnancy are extremely common. But why is this, and what can you do to reduce them? We’re here with the full scoop on skin tags during pregnancy.

What Are Skin Tags?

Skin tags are tiny, mild skin growths that commonly appear in regions where there are skin folds, such as the neck, armpits, and beneath the breasts. There are many different explanations or ideas for why skin tags can appear, but let's talk about why they might show up during pregnancy.

What Causes Skin Tags During Pregnancy?

Many believe that skin tags are more common during pregnancy because of weight gain. The friction of the skin can cause skin tags to appear in places where the skin folds or moves closer together.

Some also think that skin tags are more prone to appear while you are expecting because of hormones. Your hormones can change drastically due to pregnancy, and your skin can change significantly because of this. There are still other possible reasons why skin tags show up, but overall, your body is changing with the welcoming of a new one, and that’s to be expected!

The good news is that skin tags are not harmful and do not threaten the body. It can be painful if they get pulled or stuck on something, but you should not feel worried if they show up on your body. Where on the Body Can You Find Skin Tags During Pregnancy? Skin tags can occur in places with folds or rolls, such as the neck, armpits, stomach, breasts, or anywhere on the body that experiences friction. Not everyone gains weight in the same places during pregnancy, so the areas where skin tags show up can vary based on the individual.

It is incredibly common to see women see a change in their skin during pregnancy, whether that is on their face, back, or anywhere on their body. Some also experience especially dry or oily skin, while others experience acne or even clearer skin. Your skin can become unpredictable during pregnancy, which can sometimes become discouraging. Thankfully, there are ways to treat skin tags, whether removed with a physician or resolved naturally!

What Can You Do To Address Pregnancy Skin Tags?

Although there is a chance that skin tags may not stick around after you have gone through the pregnancy, it is understandable to want them removed.

We highly recommend seeking medical attention to have skin tags removed. You should be especially careful with skin tags on your face or sensitive areas of your body. There are a few options if you want skin tags removed.

The three most common treatments for eliminating skin tags are cryosurgery, excision, and cauterization. Cryosurgery is a method in which the skin tag is frozen and subsequently removed with liquid nitrogen.

The surgical removal of a skin tag is known as excision. This is a much better option, especially if the skin tag is large. Finally, cauterization is a technique for burning off a skin tag. Your doctor can tell you which option is best for you.

Some skin tags can also disappear over time and do not need to be removed cosmetically.

Some have said that Tea Tree Oil or Apple Cider Vinegar may help minimize the appearance of skin tags naturally. Using either of these ingredients to dry out the skin tag until it falls off. The substance can be applied to the skin tag using a cloth or swab. While some have seen results using Tea Tree Oil or Apple Cider Vinegar, they are not proven to help remove skin tags.

Like anything else involving your skin, seek medical help if any part of your skin becomes infected or highly irritated.

Also, make sure to research safe products to use during pregnancy. These are certain ingredients that can be more harmful to use when you are expecting, so use caution when looking to take care of skin tags naturally or at home.
