Perfect Your Skincare Recipe by Finding the Right Ingredients

When you’re scouring the internet or a cookbook for recipes, what’s one of the first things you take a look at? Most likely, it’s the ingredients list. How many items are you going to have to buy at the grocery store? Are you unfamiliar with an ingredient? Are you allergic? Will you know how to handle the ingredients? Or will they complicate the recipe? These are all great questions, especially for those of us that are finding ourselves in the kitchen now more than ever.

That being said, if you’re going to take the time to pay close attention to the ingredients you’re going to put in your body, why wouldn’t you do the same for the ingredients you’re putting on it?

When you’re shopping for new skincare products, take the time to pay attention to the ingredients so you know what you’re exposing your skin and your body to.

Protect your most important organ

Your skin is the largest organ of your body. And due to its porous nature, your skin absorbs approximately 60% of everything that you put on it and your bloodstream absorbs substances in as little as 26 seconds! That’s why it’s imperative that you take heed to the skincare products you place on your skin. The good and the bad.

It’s important to note that when you’re dealing with skincare challenges such as acne, hyperpigmentation, overactive oil glands, or super dry skin, what we perceive as “good” or “bad” ingredients often work in tandem with one another to help us achieve our ultimate glow. The key for your skin may not be to remove all chemical-based products from your skincare routine but to find the ones that alleviate your skin symptoms while doing the least harm in the process.

Feed your skin yummy ingredients

The ingredients list on the labels of your favorite products may feel overwhelming at first. However, if you take a close look, you’ll probably see some ingredients in more than one of the products you use on a regular basis. Start with those. Google them and start placing them in categories like those below. Before you know it, you’ll be an expert on how each ingredient benefits or interacts with your skin. Here are the tastiest to be on the lookout for:

  1. Antioxidants - Think of antioxidants as little soldiers placed strategically all over your skin. Their job is to fight free radical environmental damage. Look for serums and anti-aging boosters packed with ingredients like Vitamin C, vitamin E, and green tea for the ultimate protection from the environment.
  2. Skin-replenishing ingredients - These ingredients are responsible for keeping your skin fortified. They keep the surface of your skin youthful. What ingredients should you look for? Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, fatty acids, amino acids, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid to name a few.
  3. Skin-restoring ingredients - When it comes to skin-restoring ingredients, one of the most researched that you’ve probably run across at this point in your skincare journey is...retinol! If you’re for a power ingredient that will improve the appearance of dull skin, soften a rough surface, and keep your skin looking younger, retinol and skin brightening products are the names of the game.

These are just a handful of the most popular ingredients you’ll come across when doing your research before perfecting your secret skincare recipe. The key is to make sure you dive deep into each ingredient, “taste test,” and don’t be afraid to try new recipes along the way.
