Everything You Need To Know About Your Pore Size
Pore size can be yet another confusing skin issue that plagues many men and women. While they unfortunately can’t be shrunk, due to the fact the size is ultimately determined by genetics, you can reduce their appearance. On the other hand, if you are noticing an increase in the appearance of your pores, a few other factors could be to blame. The good news is there’s something you can do about the latter! 😊
Essentially, those “dots” or “holes” you see on your skin are actually the openings of hair follicles. Each one contains a sebaceous (oil) gland, which produces your skin’s oils. Pores are much more noticeable on parts of the face, like the forehead and the nose, where the sebaceous glands are larger. The size of your pores depends primarily on your genes. Typically, fair-skinned people have pores on the small side while those with olive or darker skin have larger pores. Your skin type can play a role in this too. Naturally dry skin tends to appear more “pore less”, while oily skin often has more visible pores.
Other factors like dead skin cells and trapped sebum (which pull together and form a pimple) can stretch out pores. UV rays weaken the collagen that supports pores and keeps them tight causing them to appear larger. Yet another reason to protect your skin using a high quality physical sunscreen! Similarly, the collagen loss that comes naturally with aging can increase the appearance of pore size. Avoid picking at or squeezing pimples as this can cause trauma to the skin, which may permanently widen the pore.
Some other great ways to keep your pores from appearing larger, are to keep your pores “clear” by avoiding products that contain heavy ingredients that can clog them, washing your face twice daily and never sleeping with makeup on. You may want to also explore different treatment options such as facials, chemical peels, and laser treatments that can aid greatly in your skins overall appearance. As always, getting moving through some form of exercise and drinking lots of water will help rid your skin and body of toxins, improving your overall health and ultimately, your appearance.
