Ingrown Hairs q+a

What causes hairs to become ingrown?
There a few different factors that can lead to ingrown hairs/folliculitis. Often clients with darker skin tones or certain ethnicities are prone to ingrown hairs because their hair is thick and curly. Thick, curly hair can irritate the skin when it tries to break through to the surface. Curly hair can often grow in a way that it actually curls back under the skin and becomes ingrown before it even reaches the surface. Sometimes incorrect shaving techniques or waxing can lead to ingrown hairs, but in my experience it is more often from the hair’s natural thickness and curly texture.
What is the most effective treatment for ingrown hairs?
To be fully transparent, the #1 most effective treatment for ingrown hairs is laser hair removal. At our Medical Spa and Laser Center (click here to visit Urban Skin Solutions) we have been performing laser hair removal on all skin tones since 2006. There are many rumors out there that laser hair removal is not safe for darker skin tones, which is INCORRECT. When treated with a 1064 NM YAG laser and by an experienced practitioner, you will see effective and safe results.
What are the most effective ingredients to use on skin affected by ingrown hairs?
I recommend a mixture of exfoliating, antibacterial, and calming ingredients to use topically in the areas that are prone to ingrown hairs. Sulphur and salicylic acid exfoliate and kill bacteria (click here for our Clear Skin Cleansing Bar) (Click here for our clear & even tone clarifying glycolic pads). Also, ingredients like hydrocortisone, arnica, and Echinacea reduce redness and inflammation which is another symptom of ingrown hairs. (click here for our Clear Complexion Acne Serum)
How do you treat the appearance of scarring and dark spots caused by ingrown hairs?
When dealing with dark spots/hyperpigmentation from ingrown hairs, it is important to know that as long as you continue to get ingrown hairs it is difficult to completely fade the appearance of scarring it is leaving behind. It’s like trying to fade a dark spot when you keep going in the sun. You always need to first treat the underlying issue that’s causing the dark spots/hyperpigmentation before you can really expect to adequately improve the area. So, that again leads me to always recommending laser hair removal in addition to a home care regimen to fade the appearance of scarring and dark spots caused by the ingrown hairs. If the hair growth is under control or you are no longer getting ingrown hairs, then I recommend using a home care regimen that consists of sunblock, exfoliating and skin lightening ingredients (Click here for our package for uneven skin tone).
