#Mythbuster: Moisturizers Aren’t for Every Skin Type

“I have oily skin, the last thing I need is a moisturizer.” False! Have you lived the majority of your life with oily skin thinking that you should steer clear of moisturizers? Or used a certain type of moisturizer because of your skin tone?

There are plenty of myths around moisturizers but the first one you need to bust is the myth that moisturizers aren’t for every skin type. While every person’s skin should be treated special and every skincare routine should cater to unique needs, everyone should incorporate a moisturizer into their skincare routine. That includes people with oily skin.

Even if you have oily skin, you still need a daily moisturizer.

We get it, it seems counterintuitive to lather cream on oily skin. But the truth is, even if you have oily skin, you still need a moisturizer to act as a last line of defense against factors that negatively affect moisture-regulating layers of your skin. Avoiding a moisturizer could trick your skin into producing more sebum resulting in an increase in blemishes.

Fight your impulse and take into consideration that the right moisturizer will:

  • Balance your skin’s moisture levels - Maintaining your skin’s moisture is critical for forming a protective barrier, preventing bacteria growth, regenerating new skin cells and enhancing elasticity. When your skin’s moisture levels are out of whack, your skin is at risk.
  • Provide protection from environmental stressors - Your moisturizer should always the final step in your skincare routine. It locks in all of the other products while protecting your skin from stressors such as dirt in the air, chemical pollution and extreme temperatures that attack the skin on a daily basis and can cause irritation, inflammation and other reactions.
  • Keep your skin hydrated - When it comes to fighting the signs of aging skin, the key to the fountain of youth is hydration. A hydrating moisturizer will keep your skin supple, healthy and younger-looking.

How do I know which moisturizer is best for my skin type?

Start by acknowledging your skin type and concerns.

If you have oily skin, your biggest concern shouldn’t be avoiding a moisturizer. Instead, try a lightweight, non-pore-clogging formula that is suitable for oily skin types and will deliver intense hydration and a youthful glow.

If you have drier skin you desire a heavier weight moisturizer but your primary goal should be to find one that will provide substantial long-lasting hydration. And If you have relatively normal skin you may be more focused on finding an everyday moisturizer that fights the signs of aging.

Still unsure? Consult The Melanin Experts™ at Urban Skin Rx®! We’ll recommend a skincare regimen customized to your unique needs taking into consideration your skin type and challenges.

Should I wear a moisturizer with SPF?

YES! This is one of the most frequently asked questions that our customer experience team gets. Not only is it important to incorporate a moisturizer Into your skincare routine, it’s also important to protect your skin from the sun. Cancer-causing UV rays don’t discriminate, no matter your skin type or tone. Not to mention, corrective skincare products containing AHA or BHA acids may make your skin extra sensitive to the sun even if it’s cloudy outside. Find a daily moisturizer with SPF 30 and it will protect your skin and your complexion!

Whether you have extremely oily skin or suffer from chronic dehydration, there’s a moisturizer for you. Don’t let troublesome acne or inflammatory conditions intimidate you when it comes to choosing a moisturizer. Do your research, consult a skincare expert, and find your moisture BFF!
